Presidential Intelligence

So I just had a chat argument with a guy over him calling President Obama "retarted". His spelling, not mine. So we started off on a good foot, because those who know me know that I didn’t let that one pass. I also pointed out to him that calling arguably our most intelligent president in years retarded, especially in light of the mental acuity of our previous president, was moronic. He argued that Bush got blamed for a lot that wasn’t really his fault. Of course he did, that’s what happens to presidents. Like Barack Obama being blamed for the record debt America holds right now. Never mind that George W. came into office with cash surpluses that Clinton left him and quickly turned them into record deficits that made even Reagan’s look mild. Never mind that G.W. got us embroiled in a war we never should have even considered.
He argued that we HAD to attack Iraq, due to 9-11. Again with the "retarted". Apparently he forgot that even Bush eventually admitted that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. He was also unaware, until I pointed it out to him, that no one from Iraq was involved in the attacks. A whole bunch of Saudis were, but hey, they are our buddies, our pals, our friends.
But wait, he argued. Iraq had nukes; we had to stop them. What? By this time my head is spinning like I just finished drinking a case of beer alone. Nukes? Iraq didn’t even have the wmd’s we accused them of having at the time, let alone nukes.
I once saw a quote, I can’t remember who it was credited to. "While it would not be true to say that all conservatives are stupid, it would be true to say that most stupid people are conservative."
What kind of uneducated, uninformed people do we really have in this country? And these folks vote. Usually straight Republican ticket.

  1. I'm not going to argue the "retarted" point with you. There are too many people on both sides of the aisle who are uneducated, uninformed, and misinformed. (Btw, I disagree with the "Usually straight republican" comment. Stupidity is equal opportunity.)

No, what I would like to argue is the point about the debt. Yes, it is true that the debt has risen for EVERY president since it started. Look it up. From inauguration to inauguration it has never been less. Never. The issue here though, isn't the president, but the congress. They create the budget. They allocate the money. The president merely has the choice of signing it, or shutting down the government until a stopgap budget is passed.

It's called separation of powers...look that one up too.

Until we elect a congress that is willing to do what it takes to balance the budget and get rid of the deficits and starts paying off the debt, which is the real problem, we continue to borrow from our children and our children’s children, and run the risk of a national or possibly even global catastrophe.

  2. And yet, to hear all the talk show folks, Barack Obama is running up our debt. I never seemed to hear them say that about Shrub (Molly Ivins' name for him) when he was hiding the cost of the wars to make it look as though he weren't running up the debt as much. Even with a Republican Congress, Clinton managed to leave us with a cash surplus. Yes, the DEBT was still astronomical, and whatever you want to claim, thank Reagan and Bush 41 for that. But President Clinton put a handle on it and began to whittle away at it. Of course, it is really hard to keep whittling away at the debt when we have to spend billions upon billions of dollars to sustain a couple of wars, at least one of which we never should have been involved in. Then I am insulted when I stop at one of my vendors and see, tacked to the wall, a nice little memeo of a graph showing the economy in a meteoric fall with President Obama standing next to it dressed like Urkel, saying "did I do that?" Retarted might very well be equal opportunity, but it seems to me that conservatives give it far more opportunity.

  3. Oh, and I forgot to add... it is true that Congress comes up with the budget, and the President merely either signs it or vetoes it. So the "fiscally responsible" Republicans, who held a majority in Congress from 1994 until 2006, were the ones responsible for the astronomical debt we added under the leadership of G.W. Bush. Yes?
By the way, these are the same "family values" Republicans who seem to constantly be cheating on their wives. Sweet.
